Then, I could flip the fuselage half over and add more glue from the back side through the hole. I was able to put minimal quick-setting extra thin cement on the ridge, place the panel, and wait a few seconds for it to grab. Instead, Tamiya has a deeper recess at the panel line, a raised ridge that insures a flush fit, and a hole through the fuselage. If you used too little glue the panel would fall back out at some inopportune moment too much and the excess may squeeze out and require cleanup or, worse, find your finger and leave your “builder’s mark” (aka fingerprint) in the plastic. Traditionally there would be a flat recess that the panel would drop in and hopefully be flush. This makes things quite clear and I found it extremely helpful.īefore constructing the cockpit, Tamiya has you install several exterior panels. Several of the steps, including the first, are just detail painting instructions. Being a sucker for shark’s teeth, I chose Option B for VF-111 Sundowners. Pick the scheme you plan to build before starting construction, because there are minor part and painting differences between the airframes. Canopy masks are included, although they are not pre-cut.īuild options include extended refueling probe, boarding ladder, dropped flaps, deployed air brakes, folded wingtips, and open or closed canopies. Nearly 400 decals make up the three schemes and stencils. There’s also a stencil layout, tech tips, painting tips and a short history. In several cases, Tamiya has left two or three different letter trees together for example, Q, R, and S were still connected.Ī 24-page, 63-step instruction book guides construction, and three to-scale, color painting instructions show the marking options. Tamiya provides 399 molded light gray and clear parts on 22 parts trees - at least by the letters. It’s only shortcoming - the lack of an internal cannon - stemmed from non-fighter pilots deciding that the age of close-contact aerial combat (dogfighting) was over, leading at least one fighter pilot to comment, “Never bring a missile to a gunfight!” Everyone from Academy to Zoukei-Mura has produced a 1/48 scale Phantom, so do we really need another? Read on. For instance in all the 388th TFW aircraft it is called out as the 338th TFW.With two Genereal Electric J79 engines belching black smoke and carrying up to eight air-to-air missiles ordnance load larger than most World War II bombers, the F-4 epitomized brute force fighter design. Not a fan of Microsoft decals due in large part to what I see a hap hazard research and misinformation, I bought them anyway but due diligence in doing ones own research is needed. I found it a bit difficult to find decals for Vietnam era F-4E's and only really found them from Microsoft. The kit only comes with markings for A/C 67-308 "Betty Lou". Mostly "dumb bombs" were the name of the game. Often carrying no more then two AIM-7 Sparrows for air to air and the forward two missile wells having ECM pods and or targeting pods (Pave Penny) if using smart bombs. From 68 to 71 moving mud close air support was what they did. Used in much the same way as the F-105's had been used the primary function was to "move mud"! it was not really until Linebacker and Linebacker II that the air to air escorting faction was seen heavily. The E's would have many changes and upgrades over the years of service but suffice to say the "early" variant was to last until '72 when the new wing with leading edge "fighting slats" were added. This would be one of the first things changed to a longer muzzle break. When first introduced the "E" models has a short angled back muzzle beak for the M-61A-1 20mm Vulcan cannon produced by General Electric. The 388th adopted the now ubiquities sharks mouth motif for their Phantoms. The 388th TFW flying out of Korat, RTAFB became the principle supporter giving up their F-105's to the Takhli, RTAFB based 105 wing. The F-4E was sent to SEA in 1968 shortly after they started entering the USAF fleet. ![]() I may need to adjust what I want to hang as well but I have several sets of Hasegawa weapons set A, B and C. I picked up a set of Verlinden Mk 82 which comes with 6 high drag Snake eye's and six low drags bombs. If you are doing F-105's or F-4's in particular the correct pods can make a real difference in the well dressed aircraft.
